It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mr. John W. Isaacs, a beloved staff member of our Joel E. Smilow (Hoe Avenue) Clubhouse. Mr. Isaacs worked at Madison for over 50 years and at age 93 still went to work everyday to work as a Junior Recreation Assistant at the club.
Mr. Isaacs was a former basketball player for the New York Renaissance and Washington Bears where he led his teams to championship titles.
A brief excerpt from the New York Post reads as follows:
...Isaacs was born Sept. 15, 1915. After retiring from serious competition, he coached Tiny Archibald, Chris Mullin and a thousand others. Later, he became a counselor at the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club in The Bronx.
Five days a week for over 50 years Isaacs put in eight hours at Hoe Avenue. Several days ago, he suffered a stroke at his desk. He died early yesterday morning.
"John gave his time to plenty of kids over the years. A whole lot of people looked up to him," Green [Carl Green, former Harlem Globetrotter] said. "Whenever I visited the Smilow Clubhouse with potential Board Members or supporters, John was a highlight stop at the club. He never ceased to amaze my guests with his enthusiasm and devotion to children, as well as his poetic elegance, often reciting passages from Shakespeare, the Bible, and other famous literary works, to some of the kids," said Joe Patuleia, Madison's Executive Director.
John was cherished by all the kids and staff at Madison, and the Bronx community at large and will be deeply missed.
If you would like to make a gift in memory of John Isaacs to Madison, please contact Development Director, Salina Muellich at 212-760-9600 ext. 209 or by email: smuellich@madisonsquare.org.
